“The Colors of Fall”
September 26, 2024
Hi all! I’m hoping to make this a more regular occurrence – what’s better than resource sharing?!
I’m in the midst of my yearly “Fall” theme with some of my littles (generally speaking- later on I get into apples, farm, pumpkins, Halloween, etc. etc. etc.) and I thought this would be a perfect first blog post!
I constantly have clients who have multiple needs or goals working at once. We know that the beauty of music therapy is that we can address more than one thing at once! This activity is developed to target skills including (but never limited to!) visual attention, impulse control, turn-taking, color identification (expressive and receptive), joint attention, and gross/fine motor skills through instrument play.
How???
Like so….
I place 6 instruments in front of my student, each labeled with one of these visuals (bonus points if the instruments are the same color as the object!). We talk about the objects, their color, attributes, etc. before jumping into the music.

I then start singing the song, prompting the kid(s) to only play the instrument that has the color/item being sung about (e.g., if I’m singing about the GREEN grass, they should only play the instrument with that visual on it). When I get to the chorus of the song, it’s time for free play! They can play any instrument they want until the next verse.

Some modifications: if you’re working with a group, give one labeled instrument to each child. No playing out of turn! When the chorus comes, everyone can play (and work on stop/go, too)!
